The Headphone

In June, my colleague Anne-Marie and I were contacted to expand on our previous ASMR work and contribute a chapter called “The Headphone” to the forthcoming The Bloomsbury Handbook of the Anthropology of Sound, edited by Holger Schulze which will be out in 2020. This was a super fun project, and has a creative layout, that I think separates it from a typical handbook. We’ve uploaded a pre-print copy here for people to check out. (Usual disclaimers apply: not professionally copy-edited, some small errors may remain). This project really pushed us to write in a more poetic and creative ways than usual.

If you have any interest in the intersection of sound and the social world, this handbook has a really novel approach.

It’s divided into six sections: Living with Sonic Artifacts, Sounding Flesh, The Habitat in Sound, Sonic Desires, The Listening Machines, Sensologies.

I mean how could we say no after just an intriguing list of section headers? I mean!
